Yet another coin from the British Empire....
The dissolution of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland on the last day of 1963 gave rise to the new states of Zambia (previously North Rhodesia) and Malawi (previously Nyasaland), but left unsettled the fate of the former Southern Rhodesia, which unilaterally declared its independence from Great Britain as “Rhodesia” in November, 1965.
It took a while to shake things out, of course. Britain was very reluctant to let go. And along the way, “Rhodesia” changed names, becoming first “Zimbabwe Rhodesia” in 1978, and then simply “Zimbabwe” in 1980.
The coin below is a double-denominated 2-shillings/20-cent piece from Rhodesia’s first solo coinage, dated 1964 and introduced early in 1965. The reverse design—which has become the customary obverse of the coinage of present day Zimbabwe—reproduces the image of a soapstone bird carving found at the stone ruins from which the country’s name derives.
