Between-the-wars. One of the “Wounded Belgium” 1-franc pieces of 1922-35, this one a Flemish language variety. By the time this 1929 franc was coined, unfortunately, memories of the war were fading somewhat. Which made a new war all the more likely.

This piece belongs to a series whose message changes radically, I think, the later the date of the coin.

Here’s another between-the-wars coin with a particularly meaningful date, a 1921 UK penny coined the year the Washington Naval Conference began. A hopeful beginning to the postwar—and more than simple hope—results, too. Britannia with her Neptune’s trident destroyed 24 warships as a result of the Conference, and the host Americans destroyed 26 more. Japan destroyed 16, and the race among the major navies of the world to build more and bigger battleships was…postponed.

But not cancelled.

Between-the-wars. Out of the Ottoman wreckage emerged the new Republic of Turkey, much smaller of course, but amazingly energetic. This “1922” (AH1341) 10-piastre is a second-year example of its first coinage series—although it seems more correct to call this a “Transition to the Republic” piece. (The Sultanate was not formally abolished until November 1922, and the Republic was not formally declared until October 1923.)

Gone is the Toughra of the Ottomans; newly-arrived is the Star and Crescent.
