It looks like an ordinary homeland type, but this 1843 British half-farthing was intended for use in Ceylon. Still, it had also been proclaimed current at home the previous year, in 1842—so the rose was accentuated, and the thistle and shamrock added, to make it look more familiar to the British public.

These coins really did circulate in the UK, but encountering one was definitely not an everyday thing, to a point where theManchester Guardian felt compelled to publish a “CAUTION—Attempts have recently been made in this neighbourhood to pass off the new half farthings for half sovereigns.”

Mintage of Victoria’s half-farthings peaked with the coins dated 1844 and declined thereafter. The last half-farthings were dated 1856, and the coins were demonetized in the UK in 1869.

Thank you for showing this odd coin. I would like to add its smaller brother, the Quarter Farthing (Spink 3953). This coin was exclusively made for Ceylon and never got the status as legal tender in the UK. Here the coin of 1839, the coin was minted also with the dates from 1851 to 1853 and in 1868 some proofs were minted of bronze and copper-nickel (also the Half Farthing). Nevertheless it was the smallest sub-unit of the Pound Sterling ever, 3840 pieces made one Pound. Best regards, KarlAntonMartini

Nice example of this small beauty, one which has unfortunately never crossed my path. I'm glad for the look, and the reminder--16 to a penny--my, my.

There was also Third-farthing only to be used in Malta. This coin was first struck under William IV. in 1828 and continued (not every year) until 1913. In Malta accounts had to be kept in Maltese currency, i.e. 1 Scudo= 12 Tari; 1 Tari = 20 grains. 1825 british coins were introduced to the following rates:

Crown = 3 Scudi
Half-crown = 1 Scudo 6 tari
Shilling = 7 Tari 4 Grains
Sixpence = 3 Tari 12 Grains
Penny = 12 Grains
Halfpenny = 6 Grains
Farthing = 3 Grains

So the Third-farthing counted for 1 Grain.

The Half-, Third- or Quarter-farthings of many years are very similiar from type, but the diameter may help: Half-farthing 18 mm, Third-farthing 16 mm, Quarter-farthing 13-13,5 mm.

Here an example of 1830 (Spink 3827). Best regards, KarlAntonMartini

The UK tried in the second quarter of the 19 th. century to make british coins circulate in the colonies. (This attempt finally failed because many of the colonies were used to silver based currencies and the UK had a gold currency from 1816 on. The gold/silver ratio in the colonies was higher than it was in London.) The low wages and prices in the colonies caused the need of small silver coins. 1834 was introduced a coin of 1 1/2 d, called "Three-halfpence". It was not legal tender in the UK and was continued until 1862. The diameter ist only 12 mm. Spink 3837. Best regards, KarlAntonMartini

Danke, KAM, for laying out the Malta currency scheme. Some years ago I acquired a 1902 1/3-farthing and had looked into its background a little--nothing, however, as completely as you laid out.

One thing that did strike me with some force, though--once I had done the multiplication and learned there were 2,880 of these pieces per pound sterling--was how neatly that number fit the mintage total of the 1902 coin: 288,000--an even 100 pounds' worth. And again in 1913

Thanks also for the comment on gold-silver ratios accounting for some of the colonial difficulties in using UK homeland coinage. Adds a dimension I have not fully appreciated (I usually get stuck on copper coinage being unpopular, etc.). Glad for the extra layer!

:) v.
