An old German postcard from the turn of the previous century, with a snapshot of the Spanish coins then circulating. At center top is a cardboard copy of the 1891(91) 1-peseta, but cardboard is never as good as in the metal....

For many decades the signature denomination of the Spanish coinage series was the peseta, which began in 1869 as the coin of .835 fine silver and 5-gram weight familiar to collectors acquainted with the Latin Monetary Union, and ended as a tiny piece of aluminum in 2001.

One of the more distinctive portraits in modern coinage adorns this 1891(91) 1-peseta, struck in the peseta’s original weight and fineness. If the portrait looks babyish, it should. Alfonso XIII was just a two-year-old when this portrait first appeared (1888) on Spanish silver.

He was still only a five-year-old when this particular piece was coined. This 1-peseta type appears in only two different dates, 1889(89) and 1891(91), with this 1891(91) being by far the more common of the two.

Alfonso XIII was mentioned in Gilson Willets’ 1899 book, Rulers of the World at Home: “This bright, intelligent, but sad-looking boy-King was born under a star or christened under a name which can hardly be termed lucky. None of the friends of his house were pleased to learn that the name of Alfonso XIII had been given him, because all Spaniards are superstitious, and all thirteens are believed to be unlucky in everything and everywhere. The name was chosen for him by his royal mother as a delicate compliment to his deceased father and to his godfather, Pope Leo XIII.”

Alfonso XIII was born in May, 1886. His father was already dead, having died the previous November.
