Great Britain Reichweite wurde enorme.

Great Britain’s reach was tremendous. Only a couple of years before the above 20-cent piece was coined for New Brunswick, the UK was adding—on the other side of the world—Stonecutter Island and Kowloon to its “Hong Kong” portfolio. China had ceded Hong Kong island to Great Britain in 1842, and in 1898 had given the UK a 99-year leasehold on the “New Territories.”
Britain’s Hong Kong colony reverted to the Chinese in 1997, but only because Imperial Japan was defeated in 1945.
Imperial Japan had been breaking off large pieces of China since 1931, had intensified the ferocity of its effort in ’37, and had broadened its depredations to nearly all of its neighbors in December, 1941. By 1943, the 500M persons under its sway gave the Japanese Empire control over a population second only to that of the British Empire.
Illustrated below is a 1939h 5-cent from prewar Hong Kong, coined of pure nickel in Great Britain the year WWII began in Europe. It is not in very good condition, but I have chosen it intentionally for its reverse damage, as a representative of its time and place.
About 70 tons of Hong Kong’s pure nickel coins were found in Japan after its surrender in 1945. (The Japanese had collected these coins for wartime industrial use.) The coins that were found could not all be returned to circulation in Hong Kong, however, because of the damage inflicted on them by the Japanese.
Hong Kong’s nickel 5- and 10-cent coins were demonetized in ’49, after the new brass versions had been issued in sufficient numbers.
