:whow:

My only firsthand acquaintance with the Angolan 2-macutas is the small copper-nickel coin of 1927-28. It’s a coin that’s piqued my interest because of its double-denomination—and I like the allegorical portrait that adorns it—so I clicked on your thread thinking I would learn more about it.

What a surprise! Old copper, (very) big and heavy—it has to be fun to hold—and the added romance of an overstrike with a partially visible host-coin beneath. Scarce, too. Nice!

My 1801-1900 Krause is old too, but it’s a little newer (2006). Your coin was still not illustrated, but had acquired a new catalog number (KM49). Of the three dates listed, 1815, 1816, and 1819, only the 1816 was accompanied by a mintage figure: 3,175.

But that was 11 years ago. I hope they’ve improved the Angola section since then.

Nice coin! Congratulations…

Thanks for both comments!

Just found a newer KM of 2009 under my desk. The coin is still without picture, but now with the number #47. There seems to be some ongoing numismatic work.
Thanks for the correction of the mintage figure! The catalogue of Rebelo de Sousa has no mintage figures. Now I have to find my Gomez and my Vaz/Delgado ...

That was very much my thought, looking at the catalog--the section definitely seemed "in-progress."

I'm sorry about the mintage figure...I hoped it was new information about a different date, that could be added to what you had already.

Funny thing is--in my 2006, and maybe in your 2009--the 1819 coin is singled out as rare. For me--someone who doesn't often venture beyond the usual modern stuff--a circulation coin with a mintage below 5,000 is rare. So maybe I need to get out a little more.

The coin of 1819 is unconfirmed. It is perhaps unique or even non-existing - so really "rare". ;-)

I return to this thread on the Angolan 2-macuta for a little fun, because I recently encountered an Angolan 10-centavo piece of the 1921-23 type.

This note in my coin-notebook deals with Angola’s 10-centavos/2-macutas coin of 1927-28, which had been all I had known of the macuta…

x: This 1928 Angolan 10-centavos/2-macutas—double-denominated on its face—is one of those “bridge-coins” that sometimes appears at various times and places. You can see them trying to straddle a cultural or political divide, and sometimes they seem constructive and practical, but other times they can seem…well, condescending, or manipulative. (10)

Then along comes the 1923 10-centavo pictured below, and the first thing I see is that it isn’t called out in macutas at all. So it looks maybe as if the colonial authorities had debuted a purely centavos-denominated coin, but then felt the need to backtrack some, and explain the new centavos in terms of the old macutas after all.
